Blair

Description

Blair is a small town in southwestern Oklahoma of which the residents refer to as “a small town with a big heart.” Blair is a friendly little town where the people are always ready to support their citizens in time of need. Originally a part of Old Greer County Texas, the original name was Dot and the post office was opened in 1893. The town was then located about a mile south of the present site but after deliberations by some of the founding fathers a decision was made to change the name to Blair. Blair was incorporated on July 13, 1901. It’s the home of the Annual Boll Weevil Bash each June. The cost of living is low. The crime rate is very low and the school is very good and there are several very fine churches. The school is all in one building and contains K-12 and the graduates of Blair High School are very competitive academically with students from other schools. A new four lane state highway 283 runs right down the middle of town and this highway connects with Interstate 40 about 38 miles to the north. There is a small municipal airport about seven miles south of Blair on Highway 283. The nearest larger town is Altus, Oklahoma and for years it has been said that one day Blair and Altus will be connected and when you make the 10 mile drive to Altus you will see that the prophecy may indeed come true because of the growth of businesses and homes along the highway. The area is predominately agriculture and many of the residents are employed at Altus AFB. It is a place to call “my home town.”

Although Blair may seem to be a small town it has all the necessary services a community would need to function properly. The police department is easily accessible and all emergency calls are called through 911, which makes emergencies much more easy to deal with. Blair also has a fire department, which is composed of volunteers from the community, which speaks volumes for the citizens of this community. Any emergency requiring an ambulance must call the emergency services from Altus, but Altus is only a short drive down the road. The same is necessary for the hospital. Blair can also access Integris Medical Clinic in Altus, as well as Main Street Family Medical Clinic. Transportation in Blair or out of Blair can be accessed through the Southwest Transit. Also any problems that need to be addressed can be handled at Blair City Hall, which is located at 118 W. Main St.
