Lawn & Turf Shortcourse Scheduled March 17th

Press Release
March 2, 2009
Brian Pugh, Haskell County Extension Educator, Ag/4-H & CED

Have you ever wanted to improve the looks of your lawn?  Maybe you have seen a lawn that looks like a golf course and wondered how they do that.  Possibly, you would at least like to reduce the amount of mowing your lawn requires.  These topics will all be covered in an upcoming Lawn Shortcourse and they may be easier than you think!

Most homeowners enjoy keeping their lawns looking neat and pristine, but sometimes even the experts get frustrated at the problems one can run into.  Between weed problems, bare spots, too little time to mow, and disease and insect pressure it is easy to forget why we want a nice lawn...it seems too difficult.  However, the truth is that maintaining a well manicured lawn is not difficult at all, and may require less total time per year than a yard that is only mowed routinely.  How is this possible?

Join us beginning on March 17th at 5:00pm at the Haskell County Extension Office and we will try to answer these questions.  (We will then travel to the County Fair Barn)

March 17th topics will include:

Weed identification of winter annual grass & broadleaf weeds;  Sprayer calibration;  Spring weed control;  Basic soil fertility.

April 14th topics will include:

Observe weed control demonstrations;  What, Where, When, Why of herbicide use;  Aeration & Dethatching;  Mowing Basics.

June topics will include:

Observe weed control demonstrations;  Weed identification of summer grass & broadleaf weeds;  Disease ID & control;  Fall considerations for turf

We will have demonstration lawns in Stigler to observe the use of herbicides, mowing height, and mowing frequency.  This program is open to anyone maintaining residential, business or school turf that would like a little more information and some hands-on assistance.  The registration fee of $10 for all three evenings is to cover refreshments and deli trays.

Contact the Extension Office at 918-967-4330 to RSVP for this event by March 13th
