Tiner Named SW Oklahoma OHCE Rookie Member of the Year

Jyme Tiner (right) was named the Oklahoma Home and Community Education (OHCE) Southwest Rookie Member of the Year last Thursday, March 31st in Elk City at the SW District OHCE meeting.

CHICKASHA, Okla. -      The Oklahoma Home and Community Education (OHCE) group of Grady County traveled on Thursday, March 31st to the Southwest Oklahoma OHCE meeting at the United Methodist Church, Elk City.  31 Grady County OHCE members attended the annual meeting and educational sessions conducted by the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service for this volunteer group.

Jyme Tiner, Grady County OHCE member, was named 2016 Southwest Oklahoma OHCE Rookie Member of the Year during the business meeting.  Ms. Tyner, a three-year member of Rural Neighbors local OHCE group, serves as the Grady County Resource Management Committee chair in which she has helped to organize computer education classes for county OHCE members and led a wildflower beautification project along Highway 62 east of Chickasha in partnership with the Oklahoma Department of Transportation.

“Jyme is very deserving of this award.  She has taken a leadership role at the local and county level in the past two years and accomplished many goals in these roles,” said Susan Routh, Grady County Extension Educator.  Ms. Tiner will be competing for the opportunity to be named the state OHCE Rookie Member of the Year which will be announced in July at the state meeting.

“Grady County was well represented at the district OHCE meeting.  Shirley Burns as state OHCE President conducted the business meeting”, said Routh.  “Also, members delivered 853 pillowcases which were donated to the Ryan’s Case for Smiles project, a community service project adopted by Southwest Oklahoma OHCE members this spring.”

Over 5,000 pillowcases were donated to the project from the 20 Southwest Oklahoma counties’ OHCE groups.  The pillowcases are expected to be given to pediatric patients in Oklahoma City’s Children’s Hospital and Tulsa’s St. Francis Hospital as a way to help bring a little comfort during a hospital stay.  More information about the community service project can be found at

Grady County OHCE members have the opportunity to attend the Southwest District meeting each year which is hosted in one of the 20 southwest Oklahoma counties.  Members attend educational lessons at the local, county, district, and state level and are supported by the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service.
