NW District 4-H Full of Talent

Jessica Nickels, MS, RD/LD Extension Educator-4-H Youth Development

Young people from all over Northwest Oklahoma shared talents and lots of fun Saturday, January 28, 2017 at the Northwest District 4-H Share-The-Fun Festival held at the Fairview School Auditorium.

Eleven (11) individual acts, four (4) small group acts, and five (5) large group acts from eleven (11) counties were on the program Saturday.

“Share-The-Fun is a talent-sharing activity designed to help boys and girls discover, develop and demonstrate talents and begin to appreciate the performing arts,” said Jim Rhodes, Northwest District 4-H Youth Development Program Specialist.

"The contest helps the 4-Hers develop poise, confidence and skill by appearing before an audience, plus it may lead to vocational or professional careers related to entertaining for the 4-Hers," he said.  Rhodes went on to share that Reba McEntire credits 4-H Share-The-Fun as a factor in her start in the entertainment business.  Other entertainers who were 4-H alumni include Ricky Skaggs, Glen Campbell, John Denver, Jerry Clower, Vince Gill, Faith Hill, David Letterman, and Sissy Spacek.

“Not only are the young people learning, but they're having fun – just like the name of the activity indicates,” Rhodes said.

The members have the opportunity to work and play together in groups and share their talents and ideas with their peers.

The large group act winners were:  1st place from Garfield County with an act called “If I Were Not a 4-Her I Know What I Would Be”; 2nd place was from Ellis County with an act called “Arnett Has Talent”; and 3rd place was from Woods County with an act called “Synchronized Swimming”

The winning small group acts were:  1st place “Anything You Can Do” from Woodward County; 2nd place “Austin & the Trumpettes” from Harper County; and 3rd place “Garber Airlines” from Garfield County.
